NORMAL, Ill.-A late comeback effort that saw the Bison erase a 3-1 third-period deficit came up short, as Bloomington fell to the Kalamazoo Wings in a shootout at Wings Event Center on Sunday.
Both teams came out quickly to start the contest, trading blows in the opening minutes.
An early collision between goalie Callum Tung and a defender led to an open cage behind the Bison crease before Nikita Sedov prevented an early deficit with a goal-line save.
Bloomington’s best chance of the opening period came midway through, as Eddie Matsushima was stopped at close range.
A late power play for the Wings was successfully killed off by the Bison, sending the game into a scoreless intermission after one period.
The second frame saw the Wings open the scoring five minutes in before extending their lead to 2-0 less than a minute later with back-to-back goals from the blue line.
Fighting back, Brandon Yeamans cut the deficit to one, putting the Bison on the board on an assist from Kohei Sato and Riku Ishida midway through the second period.
Bloomington’s momentum was short-lived, as a pair of Bison penalties gave the Wings another score on the back end of a double-minor high-sticking call, making it 3-1.
Two more Bison penalties followed, and Matsushima was denied another scoring opportunity, sending the game into the third period with the Wings leading by two.
In the final frame, the Bison controlled the pace from start to finish.
Sedov’s backhand was turned aside by Kalamazoo nearly 10 minutes into the period before Matsushima converted on a wraparound to bring the Bison within one, with just over seven minutes left in regulation.
Less than 30 seconds later, Zak Karpa notched his second goal of the season from Brenden Datema and Yeamans to tie the contest at 3-3, sending it into overtime.
The extra period began with Tung showcasing his athleticism on a desperate goal-line save before getting some help from the post on a shot from the Wings later in the frame.
A few late chances came up empty for the Bison, including Matsushima’s final effort with four seconds left, sending the contest to a shootout. The Wings scored twice in the shootout to defeat the Bison 4-3.
The Bison will return home Friday, Nov. 14, to host the Iowa Heartlanders at Grossinger Motors Arena for “309 Night,” with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
