NORMAL, Ill.- Finals, COVID-19 and the Presidential election are a few stressors on the long list that overwhelm college students. For many, this semester has been full of life changing moments. Only a few weeks left in the semester and many students are unmotivated to finish strong. Second year International business major, Joi Strickland, says other things have affected her mental health during this time. Through it all she plans to better herself.
“I recently started going to counseling and that has been a new process for me and getting use to talking about how I feel rather than shoving it all off to the side. It is grueling at times, but I enjoy it and I am glad that I am doing it,” said Strickland.
Some students were nervous about the election before, during and after. Alpha Psi Lambda member, Monserrat Patino says that post-election she is doing well but during she had mixed emotions. Election results took days and built up tension says Patino. She mentioned that many minority students were concerned about the climate of campus. Patino had a safety plan which included stocking up on items that she needed and limiting herself from leaving her building unless of an emergency.
“I was definitely concerned considering that I am on campus and I am attending a predominantly white institution. It is scary when you know, as a minority, you don’t know where your future lies or your safety,” said Patino.
Students have certain responsibilities whether they are on or off campus. Alongside school, Resident Assistant Kyle McCoy says he is planning his final programs for the rest of the semester. McCoy assists a themed floor in Manchester Hall and says that he and his residents are preparing for break. It is hard to keep afloat as the semester winds down, but McCoy says he has the perfect remedy.
“I don’t feel like I have any motivation right now. The only thing that is getting me through the day is ice coffee and the fact that I know that I can go back to my bed but I feel like everyone is going through that right now,” said McCoy.
ISU Redbirds have two more weeks until the semester comes to a close.
