ISU Veterans Day Ceremony

Written by on November 12, 2019

NORMAL – Yesterday marks the annual Veterans Day ceremony hosted by the Illinois State University ROTC program.

Among the many veterans in attendance was Department Chair of the ROTC program, Lieutenant Colonel Kraig Kline of the United States Army.

A former Illinois State alum, Kline graduated in 1999 with a degree in criminal justice and received his master’s degree in 2003 while beginning his ROTC training as he has continued to serve actively for the past 17 years.

Kline took over as head of the program this past spring and takes pride in honoring veterans around the country.

“I think today’s ceremony helps us to continually remember those who have served in a variety of capacities,” Kline said. “Whether it be during war time or peace, there’s been many members across the nation who have answered that call to duty. It’s imperative that we continue to remember this as we enter a period of continuous conflict over seas.”

Kline explained the decision to serve was his own out of his support for the United States.

“I thought the military and service was a perfect way to continue to support my country. It’s what led me to decide to go active duty and pursue that passion from there.”

The ceremony consisted of guest speakers sharing stories as well as honoring veterans from different branches of the United States armed forces of past and present.

The ceremony was originally going to take place at the flagpole on the Quad. The inclement weather forced the traditional laying of flowers and playing of Taps to take place inside.
