Cloud 9 – Megan Moroney Album Review

Megan Moroney released her third studio album “Cloud 9” in February, 2026. This album is a collection of songs that touch on topics such as different forms of love, furious heartbreak, fear, imagination, upliftment, and her truth.

Megan Moroney is a female country star who was first well known in the industry for her songs “Tennessee Orange” from her first album “Lucky” and “Mama I Lied” from her second album “Am I Okay?”.

My favorite song that really hooked me into listening to the whole album is “Wedding Dress”. Moroney’s story for this song is about missing someone she is no longer with and that she doesn’t know how to not miss that person. She is fine with missing them at any time and anywhere, but she is scared she will miss that person even when she’s with someone else in a serious situation such as getting married. I love the concept of this song because I have never heard a song that has told this story. It is a deep thought to connect to the main lyric in the chorus, “Let me miss him now, but God don’t let me miss him in a wedding dress.”

Another song titled “Convincing” really caught my attention when I first listened. This is one of the more upbeat songs musically. When you listen you would think this song is just a happy love song. But, the thing that makes this song so great to me is that the lyrics go deeper than they sound. Lyrically the song describes a relationship that is not exclusive, but to anyone looking on the outside, it’s convincing enough to look real and locked in love. I love the concept of a song that isn’t about a solid relationship, but about a situationship that has potential to be more because all of the elements are there. I love the lyrics, “I say, “This is so dumb”

You say, “Shut up and kiss me”. We ain’t in love. But damn, we’re convincing.”

“Who hurt you” is another favorite song of mine on this whole album. “Who Hurt You” to Megan Moroney has been said to be like the “Dear John” to Taylor Swift on Tiktok which I agree with. This song is rumored to be about her past relationship with country star Riley Green. When you listen to this song you can hear the emotion in her voice. The lyrics are very bold and she does not hold back as you can see in the chorus, I guess I should’ve known. I’d be out here all alone. In the mess you made, it was all just fake. How did you get so cold? And, no, I wouldn’t take you back. But what makes it all a little sad. Is knowing I wasn’t the first. And I know I won’t be the last. You can also hear the story in her voice and lyricism in the bridge especially which is also trending on Tiktok, “You said you needed less flashy, more fun. Oh, of course she’s twenty-one. On your arm through the bar. God, I hate how gross you are. And how did I not see it? Your ego, it needs feeding. Endlessly, relentlessly. At the cost of me. And I’ll move on, and I’ll find better. But you’ll stay the same forever. And ever, happy never.” This is the perfect female rage song for anyone going through a moving on point of a past relationship that was hurtful.

Romantic relationships aside, her songs “Liars, Tigers, and Bears” and “Beautiful Things” are the more wholesome and vulnerable songs more focused on herself and loved ones. “Liars, Tigers, and Bears” conveys the topic of the hardships of the music industry and the expectations she feels she needs to meet, showing vulnerability. A short example of this in the lyrics lies in the first verse, “Smile real big, be happy to lose. Don’t have a bad day, there’s cameras on you. Champagne problems, I know, I know. Just a wide-eyed girl learning the ropes.”  This is one of my favorite lyrics in the first verse because it can apply to anyone in life where they feel they are in a role with these expectations. I love the song “Beautiful Things” because of how beautifully written it is for dedication to someone you love and want to inspire. Moroney has stated this song is about her niece which makes the song more special and easy for fans and listeners to use to dedicate towards people they love.

I love the diversity of this album. Every song has messages that are deeply interpreted in the lyrics to where the stories almost feel real to the listener. I also love how there is a balance of slow and upbeat and sad and happy songs. I am a very pop oriented listener and fan, so I was pleased to like a country album so much.
