NORMAL, Ill. – The Bloomington Bison came back from down 3-1 late in the third period with two straight goals, to send their matchup with the Fort Wayne Komets into overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the Bison fell in a shootout to lose their second straight game.
The start of the game was dominated by Fort Wayne, outshooting the Bison and scoring the opening goal at 3:03 in the first period. It did not take long for the Bison to flip the script, getting the final 11 of 12 shots in the period, and tying the game up with a Mikhail Abramov goal with under three minutes in the first.
The second period featured an offensive surge, with the team’s combining for 29 shots. Despite Bloomington’s efforts, Komets goalie Samuel Jonsson kept the Bison off the board. Fort Wayne scored twice, taking a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
After a tough first two periods, the third period was completely controlled by the Bison. The Bison only allowed four shots from the Komet’s offense and kept them scoreless throughout the period.
Shortly after a fight between Riku Ishida and Logan Nelson, Deni Goure scored his 15th goal of the season, shortening the deficit to one. Less than a minute later, Seung Jae Lee scored his second goal of the season, tying the game at three apiece. After 60 minutes of regulation ended in a tie, the teams headed into overtime.
In the seven extended minutes, the Bison struggled to keep up with the Komets, only getting one shot on goal compared to the Komet’s five. Bison goalie Hugo Ollas held strong and kept the game tied at the end of the extra frame.
After a missed shot by Ayden MacDonald to start the shootout, forward William Dufour scored the game-winning goal for the Komets, sealing a 4-3 victory.
The Bison remain on the road as they travel to Toledo for a two-game matchup against the Walleye on Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th. They will be back home on Friday, April 3rd, to play the Indy Fuel.
