NORMAL, Ill. – Sophomore forward Doneelah Washington is putting together an impressive season for Illinois State women’s basketball, with plenty of games still left to be played this season.

Washington has taken a big step forward in her second year with the Redbirds, becoming a consistent presence on both ends of the floor. She currently leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 16 points and nearly nine rebounds per game. Her production and energy have helped Illinois State stay competitive throughout the season.

So far this season , Washington has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week three times, highlighting her impact and consistency.

Washington says the recognition means a lot.

“Getting that recognition means a lot. It shows me that hard work pays off and everything I’m doing is working. But the most important thing is helping my team win,” Washington said.

One thing that has stood out about Washington’s play this season is her overall growth. As a freshman last year, she averaged around five points and five rebounds per game. This season, her numbers have risen significantly, showing the jump she has made in her sophomore campaign.

Head coach Kristen Gillespie says Washington’s improvement has come from her dedication and work ethic.

“This is who Washington is. She’s playing amazing, and it starts with her work ethic and how much she cares about winning. The coaching staff is very happy with how she’s played this season,” Gillespie said.

Washington says her growth this season has come from the people around her and her adjustment to the college game.

“My teammates help me a lot, but overall just listening to my coaches, playing my game, and getting used to the college game has helped my growth,” Washington said

The Redbirds have eight games left in the regular season before the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, and both Gillespie and Washington say the team is confident and focused heading into the final stretch.
