BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University hosted its inaugural Four Chaplains Commemoration Ceremony on Tuesday at Evelyn Chapel.

The event was inspired by an Illinois Wesleyan alum with a personal connection to the story of the Four Chaplains, who had also received the Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award. Further research revealed that one of the four chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox, was an Illinois Wesleyan alum, prompting the university to share his story.

“We wanted to share how George Fox, chaplain and alum, gave his life and chose to serve those around him,” said Avary Kampwerth, volunteer engagement officer at Illinois Wesleyan.

During the ceremony, the Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award, presented by the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, was awarded to James Ingold, a member of the Illinois Wesleyan Class of 1985. The award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional selfless service and humanitarian accomplishments through a formal nomination process.

Ingold was previously named the 2025 St. Jude Volunteer of the Year for the Central and Southern Illinois region and continues to contribute to numerous local causes and organizations.

“James was recognized for his powerful service, integrity, faith and compassion,” Kampwerth said. “He is a shining example of what we hope all Titans aspire to be.”

As Illinois Wesleyan celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, Kampwerth said highlighting alumni who dedicate their lives to service aligns with the university’s mission.

The ceremony also honored the legacy of the Four Chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. John P. Washington, Lt. Alexander D. Goode and Lt. Clark V. Poling, who sacrificed their lives during World War II by giving their life jackets to others aboard the sinking USAT Dorchester.

“They are a lasting example of those who are willing to put others above themselves,” Kampwerth said.

Illinois Wesleyan officials said the university plans to continue recognizing individuals who embody the spirit of the Four Chaplains through service, compassion and commitment to others.
