NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State overcame the turnover struggles to move past UNI on Wednesday night, 59-54.
A sloppy game on both sides of the ball for both teams results in just 113 total points scored all game.
The offensive side of Illinois State struggled with turning the ball over 17 times. Boden Skunberg was the bright spot for the Redbirds, scoring 20 points and making 6 threes. No other Redbirds reached double digits in scoring, with Ty’Reek Coleman scoring eight points.
Illinois State was 16-18 from the free-throw line, and coming late in the game kept the Redbird lead safe. Defensively, the Redbirds forced UNI to shoot just 35 percent from the field and 16 percent from beyond the arc.
Chase Walker’s physicality on the defensive end, particularly down low, forced many missed shots in the paint. Other starters were Johnny Kinziger with 6 points, who shot 2-10 from the field, and Ty Pence with 4 points.
The Redbirds are back in action at 2 on Sunday, January 25, at Belmont.
