Redbird’s Offense Leads Way Against Eastern Illinois in 113th Mid American Classic Meeting

Written by on September 15, 2025

NORMAL, Ill. -Illinois State Football took a trip to Charleston, IL, to play a Week 3 game against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The Redbirds and Panthers met for their 113th matchup, and it was all Redbirds in this matchup, as they would score in every quarter of this contest. This brings the Illinois State Redbirds to 2-1 on the early season, and the Panthers fall to 1-2.

The Redbird victory was highlighted by a dominant performance from Senior quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse and Senior running back Wenkers Wright who combined for 6 total touchdowns. Rittenhouse got it done for the ‘Birds through the air, throwing for 299 yards and 3 touchdowns, while adding 36 yards on the ground. Wright took care of the load on the ground, as he would rush 14 times for 94 and 3 rushing touchdowns.

Rittenhouse’s favorite target this week was a guy who last week became 5th on the All-Time Redbird Receiving list in Daniel Sobkowicz. Sobkowicz would haul in 6 receptions (led team) for 95 yards, adding 2 touchdowns. Another favorite of Rittenhouse was Sophomore Luke Mailander who snagged 5 catches for 109 yards (led team) and 1 touchdown.

The ISU defense was a mix of good and bad this week, letting up 411 passing yards (most this year), but they were also able to force 2 interceptions and only give up 36 yards on the ground. The Redbird run defense was a big factor in this Week 3 victory over Eastern, as they never gave up a rush for more than 9 yards.

Illinois State football is back in action this week as they make their way back home to play host to the Lions from North Alabama. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 20th, 2025, at 12 p.m. CT. Be sure to tune in right here on 103.3 WZND for the live broadcast of the game.
