NORMAL, Ill. – Hosting their 15th annual Play4Kay game, fundraising for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the fight against all cancers affecting women, the Redbirds were able to use this celebration and uplifting of cancer survivors to overpower a strong Missouri State team.

Illinois State wins its second home game in three nights, improving to 14-7 on the season and 8-2 in the MVC.

Following a defensive battle in the first half that saw the Redbirds grab a 1-point lead heading into halftime, Illinois State was able to increase its advantage in the second half, growing its lead to 13 points in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

A season-low 8 turnovers and a 10-2 scoring run in the final 4 minutes of play allowed the Redbirds to claw away a hard-fought victory against a tough Missouri State team.

Shannon Dowell scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, stopping a late charge by Missouri State in the fourth quarter.

Neveah Thomas posted her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Her performance put her in a tie for most double-doubles by a Redbird under Kristen Gillespie.

Addison Martin and Maya Wong both finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points, as the Redbirds finished with 4 scorers in double figures for the 15th time this season. Over the past 2 seasons, Illinois State is 24-6 when four or more players contribute double-digit points.

The Redbirds are now 8-2 over their last 10 games. After winning the last 5, they are in a tie for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference with Missouri State and Murray State while only trailing Belmont.

Coach Kristen Gillespie’s team next faces Drake on Friday, February 7. They hope to win their sixth consecutive game this season.
