NORMAL, Ill.  – The Children’s Discovery Museum will host its annual “Day of Play” in Uptown Normal today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This event is free of charge and will provide activities for children and families alike. A wide range of events and activities will be available for children of all ages.

Museum Event Coordinator and Development Assistant Amy Pitzer spoke about the event’s setup and goals.

“Our entire goal at the museum is to inspire the love of learning through the power of play, so everything we do has a playful aspect to it. All the programs and classes that we put together are fun and allow kids to learn the principles of science and technology”. Pitzer said.

In addition to the Children’s Discovery Museum, 60 community organizations will be present at the event.

“We are so grateful for our community partners because we are all coming together to provide activities and programs for our community. It’s such a strong collaboration that helps to bring together so many families.” Pitzer noted.

This annual event has been a staple of the Bloomington-Normal community for nearly 20 years.

“We actually began doing a day of play because of Nickelodeon, who created the idea in 2004. It was a great way of encouraging kids to turn off the screen and get outside and play.” Pitzer shared.

In addition to the STEAM activities, the Children’s Discovery Museum will host a bike rodeo to help teach kids about bike safety. Kids will also have the opportunity to get close to first responder vehicles in a “touch a truck” event.
