City of Bloomington Departments will hold job fair in preparation for summer

Written by on February 4, 2024

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. –  The City of Bloomington will hold a job fair at the Grossinger Motors Arena on March 5 in preparation for the seasonal jobs the city has available for the summer season.

The job fair will help people learn about further details of the job descriptions and the job responsibilities. It will give them the opportunity to have face-to-face conversations with city staff to learn more about the jobs.

Bloomington’s marketing manager of the Parks and Recreation Department Thom Rakestraw says that this face-to-face opportunity opens up ways to learn about the jobs that would not be the same through e-mail or through the phone.

“I think this is a great opportunity for anybody that’s really wanted to work for the city,” Rakestraw said. “It really builds that team camaraderie that people have with working together.”

The job fair is intended for anybody interested in working for the city. This serves as a great opportunity for teenagers in the area to find summer jobs with the age requirement at 15 years. This is a chance for many to find positions that are only available in the summer, as well as other positions that might be unexpected.

“When we think about, like, summer seasonal hiring, most people might think, ‘oh, lifeguards and that might not be right for me,’ but it’s really more than just lifeguards,” Rakestraw said. “There’s cashier jobs at the zoo, there’s youth sports leaders, there’s coaching.”

There are plenty of options for those of all ages. Positions such as bartender, usher, arena worker and more are offered.

Rakestraw said, “If there’s a position that somebody was interested in, whether it’s an usher, security, custodian or even a tennis instructor or golf attendant, it’s really a great opportunity to take a sample of what Parks and Rec and the Arts and Entertainment have to learn more and to build that resume and career.”
