NORMAL, Ill. – Every year, the Ecology Action Center (EAC) in the Normal community offers workshops for constructing rain barrels and compost bins. These workshops, typically held in the summer and fall, have gained popularity among eco-conscious individuals.

Educational Coordinator at EAC Katie Vogler highlights the importance of these workshops.

“Rain barrels are an excellent means to prevent yard pollutants from entering our water system while simultaneously reducing utility bills. The process of constructing your own rain barrel is cost-effective and environmentally responsible,” says Vogler.

During the workshops, participants build their rain barrels with expert guidance. These workshops cost significantly less than buying a pre-made barrel. Participants not only save money but also actively contribute to environmental conservation. Vogler also emphasizes the advantages of compost bins.

“Backyard compost bins offer a practical solution for reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers, shrinking your carbon footprint, and diverting food waste from landfills,” she said. “Composting enriches soil, reduces plant diseases, deters pests, saves money on fertilizers and lowers methane emissions.”

Composting workshops at EAC provide knowledge on best practices and a compost bin made from repurposed 55-gallon drums at a nominal fee. These workshops educate individuals on sustainable practices and provide them with practical tools.

The Ecology Action Center silently continues to empower individuals to make environmentally responsible choices. Vogler’s insights illustrate how these workshops offer practical avenues for both cost savings and environmental stewardship.

Student Lizzy Adams puts it, “I haven’t joined a workshop yet, but I can see the benefits. Building rain barrels and compost bins could save money and promote sustainability. It’s a win-win for students like me looking for practical ways to make a difference.”
