Illinois State Women’s Basketball raises money and awareness at annual Play 4Kay game
Normal – The Illinois State Women’s Basketball team hosted their 8th annual Play 4Kay cancer awareness game on Sunday.
The Redbirds defeated the Indiana State Sycamores, 78-70. Illinois State Athletics also teamed with Zeta Tau Alpa Sorority, Community Cancer Center, Mennonite College of Nursing, Advocate Bromenn Medical Center and the Students Nurses Association.
During halftime, survivors and those currently battling the disease walked on court for recognition. Volunteers as well as members of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority ran on treadmills and bikes during the game in efforts to raise money for the fund.
Women’s coach, Kristen Gillespie, wore a special pair of gym shoes in honor of her former coach, Kay Yow. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and fought 3 times until her death in 2009.
The fund serves to raise money for scientific research. Everyone involved in Sunday’s game raised $20,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer fund.
