NORMAL – Former Illinois State Football defensive lineman and All-American Dalton Keene recently played in the East-Weat Shrine game in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The game gives the college players invited a chance to showcase their talents in front of NFL coaches in hopes of being drafted. Ex-ISU Cornerback Davontae Harris also participated in the game.

Keene wrapped up his senior year at ISU this past fall and is currently working on being drafted into the NFL. He ended the year on the All-American Second team and was third place in the Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Keene detailed what being invited and playing in the game felt like.

“It was a great experience. It is your first real exposure to NFL coaches,” said Keene.

The players invited only had a week to meet and prepare with NFL representatives before the game. Keene detailed the main focus of the coaches was trying to see how fast each player is able to learn.

“Going in, they want to see what your learning curve is and how fast you can pick stuff up and that was basically the key when we got down there,” said Keene.

For the next three months, his mind will be focused on the NFL draft. He will attend the Northwestern Pro Day and hopes to attend others as well.

“That’s basically where I’m at right now. Kind of keeping things simple, staying with what I know, keep working and try to improve everyday,” said Keene.
