Redbirds open tourney triumphant

ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Men’s Basketball pulled off a big first-round victory in the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Thursday night as they beat the Purple Aces of Evansville 65-60.

The Redbirds (17-15, 9-9) were led by senior guard Milik Yarbrough. He had 18 points and five rebounds. 10 of his points came from the field while the other eight came from the charity stripe, where he made eight out of his 10 attempts. Fellow senior Phil Fayne was another Redbird that shined tonight. He had one less point than Yarbrough, finishing with 17. He also led the team in rebounds with 10.

“It was sloppy but we got the job done,” said Illinois State head coach Dan Muller. “We got the first one under our belt, now we can focus on tomorrow.”

Evansville (11-21,5-13) also had two players that stood out with double-digit points. One being Marty Hill, shooting 6-14 from the field as well as 50% from behind the three-point line. He finished with 16 points and four rebounds. R.J. Riley had 15 points with six rebounds to go along with that.

The win advances the Redbirds to the Quarterfinals of Arch Madness, where they are set to take on the Drake Bulldogs Friday night at 6 p.m. Coverage of the game on the Pulse of Redbird Nation will start on 103.3 and wznd.com at 5:50 p.m.
