NORMAL- Illinois Wesleyan baseball beat Millikin 7-6 in 10 innings on Thursday in Decatur, allowing coach Dennis Martel to pick up his 800th career win.

Wesleyan (17-10, 8-6 CCIW) secured the victory after an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Nick Figus drove home junior infielder Stephen Billington. Junior outfielder John Bosco also knocked in three runs in what was IWU’s sixth straight victory.

Martel is currently in his 31st season as the head coach of the Titans, joining the program back in 1988. With the win, he improves his all-time record to 800-502-3. With the most wins in IWU baseball history, Martel has also led the program to 11 appearances in the NCAA tournament, including in 2010 where he helped the Titans win the Division III national championship.

“It’s a great milestone, no doubt,” Martel said. “You have been there long enough, and I guess you hope to win that many games and have that success. But you look back, it’s just a lot of great players that have done a great job for you and great assistant coaches.”

Entering 2018, Martel ranked No. 10 in all-time victories among active Division III head coaches and No. 21 all-time. Wesleyan has only had two losing seasons during Martel’s tenure as head coach.

“I like the fact that we’ve maintained that success over a long period of time and haven’t had those down cycles,” Martel said. “And so as I finish out the latter part of my career, I hope that I’m still able to maintain that successful level.”

Illinois Wesleyan hosts Augustana in a doubleheader at Horenberger Field on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
