NORMAL – Illinois State defeated Southern Illinois in an exciting game that ended in a 68-76 win in overtime.

ISU fell behind earlier in the first half, but picked up some much needed momentum as Junior guard William Tinsley went 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from the 3-point line in the first half. He ended up going 5-8 from the field and 4-7 behind the arc on the night and finished with a career high 14 points.

Another freshman had a record night, as guard Elijah Clarence put up a career high and team leading 15 points on the night.

Both these players were highly praised by coach Dan Muller, who was happy to see key players step up in the absence of  junior guard Keyshawn Evans.

Muller was also pleased to see these players have a good night, but was concerned that his team had 19 turnovers in the wire-to-wire OT win. As the road to Arch Madness is approaching, Muller said he’s worried about the injury bug flying through the locker room.

It wasn’t all a happy ending though, junior starting forward Phil Fayne went down with about 7 minutes left to play in regulation, and did not return. With what appeared to be an ankle injury, Muller could give no update on Fayne but said that he would be “surprised if he wasn’t out for some time” with the injury.

With Fayne out, ISU will have to find new ways to deal with the offense, but showed no problem doing so Thursday with Evans already out.

ISU will travel to Missouri Valley newcomer Valparaiso this Sunday, February 11th at 3 p.m. You can listen to the road game by listening in to 103.3 WZND.
