Uptown Circle hosts annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

Uptown Circle hosts annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony was held in Uptown Circle on Monday night.

NORMAL – Illinois State University kicked off its Homecoming Week festivities Monday night, with students and faculty alike flocking to Uptown Circle for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Normal Mayor Chris Koos was joined by ISU President Larry Dietz, who came directly from a different Homecoming Kickoff event on ISU’s quad earlier in the afternoon. The event, titled “Kickoff with the Prez,” involved live entertainment and the revealing of ISU’s 2018 Homecoming Court.

Before Dietz and Koos lit Uptown’s trees, attendees saw a special performance from ISU’s marching band, the Big Red Marching Machine.

Prior to the Tree Lighting Ceremony, both community leaders delivered remarks were on the symbolic meaning and importance of this Homecoming Week tradition.

All trees in Uptown Circle are planned to remain lit until after the winter holiday season.
