NORMAL- Normal West High School senior Olivia Sonetz passed away Wednesday evening at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria after suffering critical injuries in a car accident.

According to Illinois State Police, the accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 150 and Raab Road at 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday when Sonetz’s Chrysler Sebring was hit as she was crossing the street by a GMC 3500 Pickup driven by Mitchel Mohr, 23, of Bloomington. Sonetz, 17, was transported to OSF St. Francis while Mohr was sent to Advocate Bromenn Medical Center.

Mohr has been charged with speeding, disobeying a traffic control device, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and failure to wear a seat belt. Sonetz was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Students and faculty at NWHS were informed of Sonetz’s accident on Wednesday. According to NWHS Principal Dave Johnson, counselors and comfort dogs were provided to students in the school’s auditorium to help them grieve.

“Some of them [students] were able to get back to normal yesterday and [Thursday] is more of a normal school day,” Johnson said. “However, there still are some students, especially those in softball that were closest to Livi, that are still needing a little bit more time until they’re back to closer to normal.”

Sonetz, a native of Bloomington, was a member of both the NWHS softball and wrestling teams while also serving as a mentor in the school’s Freshman Mentoring Program.

“She was just one of those students with her energy and charisma that everybody kind of connected to,” Johnson said.

Johnson says students wore blue on Thursday and also plan on wearing white on Friday in honor of Sonetz.
