Bowman Chalenges Students to Use New Recreation Center

Illinois State University President Al Bowman informed students Monday night about a rock climbing wall that's being assembled in the new Recreation Center on University Street.

President Bowman issued a friendly challenge to the next student body president.

Construction on the new building is set to be complete in January 2011.


Forte Performs at Black History Month Dinner

Grammy nominated singer and songwriter John Forte perfomed for ISU students at the Bone Student Center Monday night for the Black History Month Dinner.

Forte says every day should be a celebration of African American history and culture.


President Bowman Celebrates Black History Month with WZND

This week, WZND caught up with ISU President Al Bowman on what Black History Month means to him.


SGA Propose Student Fee Increase

ISU Student Government met this week to discuss raising student fees for next year.

Increases were proposed in many areas, primarily in ISU athletics because sports are funded only through fees, ticket sales, and donations.


University Presidents Plead for Money from State

Public university presidents are taking a stand against the budget crisis, writing a letter to Governor Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes this week.

In the letter signed by ISU President Al Bowman, the presidents express the concern they have with  the future of public universities after having to rely on tuition to keep them running.

The presidents also requested that a payment schedule be set.

Normal Police Search for Suspect in Car Burglary

The Normal Police Department is searching for a man that broke into a car on the 1300 block Hovey St. Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect stole an iPod and cologne from the victim's car.


Diversity Advocacy Highlights Segregation in America

Diversity Advocacy showed a film Tuesday night showcasing how segregation still exists in America today.

Angela Davenport, Coordinator of Diversity Advocacy, says there's still work to be done in race relations.


Normal Enforces Parking Ban

The Town of Normal has issued a parking ban effective at 5:00 pm on Tuesday due to winter weather.

Normal Police will ticket vehicles parked on the street in areas of high density parking.

The parking ban will remain in force until 7:00 am on Wednesday.


President Bowman Informs Faculty of ISU Economic Hardships

Illinois State University President Al Bowman sent a letter to faculty today informing employees they will not receive a salary bonus this fiscal year.

President Bowman's letter stated lack of state funding as the primary source for the news.

The University may plan to raise tuition to help make up for missing state dollars.

The ISU Board of Trustees approved a 7.8 percent increase of tuition in July 2009.


Heartland Narrows Presidential Search to Three

Heartland Community College has settled on three finalists in their search for a new President.

Dr. Allen Goben, Dr. Doreen M. Larson, and Dr. Vicky R. Smith were chosen as the final three candidates.

All three Presidential hopefuls have previous experience as head executives.


Winter Weather Advisory Warns of Heavy Winds and Blowing Snow

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory that is set to expire at noon on Wednesday.

Up to an additional inch of snow is possible Tuesday afternoon.

Wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour out of the Northwest are possible tonight and Wednesday morning.


Police Respond to Harassment Calls

Illinois State University Police resonded to calls of sexual harassment in Colby Hall Monday night.

A female student claimed a male voice was calling her phone using an unmarked private number.

The student received multiple calls from the offender over the weekend.

Birds Take Care of Missouri State 82-72

The Illinois State women's basketball team came out of Redbird Arena victorious Sunday night with a 82-72 win over Missouri State.

Head Coach Robin Pingeton credits the win to senior leadership.

Senior Center Nicole Lewis says the Birds play the best when they get the ball down low.

ISU's next game is Thursday against last place Evansville.


Redbirds Host Missouri State with 10 Game Win Streak on the Line

Riding a 10 game winning streak, t he ISU women's basketball team is set to host Missouri State Sunday afternoon.

Softball Loses Twice to Open Season

Redbird Softball dropped both of their first two games of their Spring season.

The Birds opened play at the Wilson-DeMarini Tournament in Clearwater with an 11-4 loss to Florida Gulf Coast.

In their second game of the day, ISU took South Florida into extra innings, but eventually fell 4-3.

ISU Pitcher Jordan Birch struck out 7 and only allowed 4 hits in the game.

The Birds continue tournament play Sunday against Canisius and Florida- Gulf Coast.


ISU Gymnastics Team Prepares for UIC

The Illinois State Gymnastics team is 6-3 on the season and preparing for a big meet this weekend at Illinois-Chicago.

Head Coach Bob Conkling says the two schools know eachother well.

Conkling has been impressed with his team's first-place showing so far.


Redbird Softball Kicks of Season at USF

The Redbird Softball team will take the field for the first time this Spring at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament this weekend.

Head Coach Melinda Fischer is excited about the return of junior Kara Nelson.

The Birds will play South Florida, East Carolina, Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, and Long Island in the tournament.


Birds Sweep Braves with Close Win

The Illinois State men's basketball team rallied in the last ten minutes of their Tuesday night contest with Bradley to come out of Peoria with the 62-61 win.

Dinma Odiakosa led the Redbirds with 15 rebounds, 7 of which were on the offensive end of the court.

ISU's next game is Saturday against Creighton in Omaha.


ISU Men to Take on Bradley

The Illinois State men's basketball team is heading to Peoria to take on Bradley tonight.

Senior Guard Alex Rubin knows how tough it is to play in Peoria.

ISU Takes Down Drake 71-69

Senior Gaurd Lloyd Phillips had a career day in Illinois State's 71-69 victory over Drake.  Phillips went 7 for 10 from the field and also hit 3 out of 4 free throws, but his most important shot came when he nailed a last second three point shot to secure the win for the Birds.

ISU Head Basketball Coach Tim Jankovich was impressed by his senior leader.

Illinois State is now in a three-way tie for third place with Creighton and Bradley.
